VL08 Southern Laos unveiled ( 4 days / 3 nights )

Vientiane - Pakse - Wat Phu - Si Phan Don - Pakse

Day 1 Vientiane - Pakse - Wat Phu - Don Khong
Transfer to the Vientiane Airport for a flight to Pakse. On arrival, drive south on the National Road 13 to Champassak to visit the temple ruins of Wat Phu which date from the 5th and 6th centuries and predate Angkor Wat by over 200 years. Originally built as a shrine to Shiva, the temple is thought to have been linked to Angkor by a 100km road marked with stones. Drive to Khong Island after lunch and stop en route to visit the village of Ban Phone Saat.
Overnight on Khong Island.

Day 2 Don Khong - Si Phan Done - Don Khon
After breakfast, enjoy a 2-hour cruise down into the widest reach of the Mekong River from where thousands of islets protrude in the dry season, thus giving this area a lovely name of "Si Phan Done” (translated as the “Four Thousand Islands"). Along the way, stop to visit the Liphi Waterfall and spend the rest of the day exploring the fishing village of Ban Done Khone. The village houses old French colonial buildings and has traces of the old colonial past with Laos’ first locomotive railway. Optionally, board on a small boat down the Mekong River to see Irrawaddy dolphins (if possible, take a 1 hour boat up and downstream).
Overnight on Khon Island. [Breakfast]

Day 3 Don Khon - Khone Phapeng - Pakse
Cross the Mekong River in the morning and take a car drive down near the Laos/Cambodia border to visit the famous waterfalls of Khone Phapeng, Southeast Asia's largest waterfalls. Return to Pakse in the afternoon.
Overnight in Pakse. [Breakfast]

Day 4 Pakse departure
The morning is free until transfer to the airport for departure flight.
[Breakfast]
